IAEA Issues Statement Criticizing Iran

Vienna, 13 March 2004 (RFE/RL) -- A spokesman for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says the group has adopted a resolution that criticizes Iran for hiding its nuclear activities.

The spokesman, Mark Gwozdecky, says the 35-member board of governors in Vienna adopted the resolution without a vote.

The resolution, seen by the Associated Press, welcomes that Iran has signed an agreement opening its programs to inspection, but "deplores" recent discoveries of uranium enrichment equipment and other activities not voluntarily revealed.

Today's IAEA resolution effectively defers the threat of UN Security Council action against Iran until the board meets again in June.
