Iran's President Condemns Diplomat's Killing In Iraq

Prague, 16 April 2004 (RFE/RL) -- Iranian President Mohammad Khatami has condemned the assassination of an Iranian diplomat in Baghdad yesterday and blamed U.S. policies on escalating violence in its neighboring country.

The state news agency IRNA quoted Khatami today as saying the "current situation in Iraq is undoubtedly the result of U.S. negligence toward the realities and the sentiments of people in the region and the continuation of a terrifying policy."

He said the only solution to the crisis is withdrawing the occupying forces, letting the United Nations play a stronger role, and transferring power to Iraqis as quickly as possible.

An Iranian delegation is currently in Iraq on what Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi has described as a "fact-finding mission."
