U.S. Kicks Out Two Iranian Security Guards

29 June 2004 (RFE/RL) - The State Department announced today that the U.S. government has expelled two Iranian security guards working at Iran's mission at the United Nations in New York.

Spokesman Adam Ereli told reporters at the department's daily briefing today that the guards were expelled for what he called activities "incompatible with their stated duties," a phrase that is generally regarded as diplomatic language for spying.

Ereli said the Iranians were videotaping unidentified locations. He declined to give any specifics.

Other U.S. officials who asked not to be identified said the guards were taking photos of infrastructure, modes of transportation, and New York City landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
