Car Bomb Explodes In Central Iraq

6 July 2004 -- A car bomb exploded near the Iraqi city of Baquba today, killing several people.

The Arabic station Al-Jazeera said a suicide attacker drove his explosive-laden car into a funeral ceremony that was being held for the brother of a local government official. The exact number of victims was still unclear.

Baquba, 50 kilometers north of Baghdad, was the scene of fierce fighting last week between U.S. soldiers and insurgents who tried to seize government buildings and police stations.

Earlier today, the U.S. military announced that three Marines were killed in operations in western Iraq yesterday.

The U.S. Marines have now lost 10 soldiers in slightly more than a week during operations in the Al-Anbar Province, which stretches from western Baghdad to the borders with Syria and Jordan.
