New PRT Base Opens In Afghanistan

7 July 2004 -- The U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan today said that it has opened a new base in southeast Afghanistan.

The base is for one of the several provincial reconstruction teams, or PRTs, in Afghanistan. PRT's combine soldiers with civilian specialists for reconstruction efforts, security, and military operations to help extend the central government's influence.

U.S. Military spokesman Major Jon Siepmann said the latest base opened in Paktika Province on 30 June. The U.S. military plans to have a PRT in every Afghan province by the end of next year.

In other developments, the U.S. military today said it has completed a third investigation into alleged prisoner abuse at its detention centers in Afghanistan.

The military said it is awaiting a final report on the matter.
