Russian Court Sentences Separatist To Prison

12 July 2004 -- The Supreme Court in the southern Russian republic of Dagestan today sentenced Magomed Tagaev to 10 years in prison.

The court found Tagaev guilty of forming illegal armed groups and of planning attacks in Dagestan in the summer of 1999 with the purpose of creating an Islamic state.

The Russian military clashed with rebel forces in Dagestan in August and September 1999, just before the second Chechen war started.

Tagaev was caught along the Russian-Azerbaijani border earlier this year after reportedly trying to enter Dagestan with a fake passport.
