Bombs Target Iraqi Justice Minister, National Guard Headquarters

17 July 2004 -- Iraq's interim justice minister escaped unhurt after a bomb attack in Baghdad today that killed at least four people and wounded seven others.

Iraqi officials say the convoy of Malik Duhan al-Hassan was targeted by a car suicide bomber about 500 meters from his home.

A U.S. Army soldier at the scene said the explosion caused extensive damage.

"We were in the sector over to the west here, we heard an explosion and saw smoke and we came over here. Once we got here, we found four to five cars that have been exploded," the soldier said.

Another car bomb exploded outside an Iraqi National Guard headquarters in Mahmudiyah, south of Baghdad.

Iraqi authorities said the two people killed and most of the 25 injured were National Guardsmen.
