Olympics Official Suspended In Bribery Scandal

7 August 2004 -- International Olympic Committee member Ivan Slavkov was suspended today following a BBC report this week alleging that he sought to secure the site of the 2012 games through bribery.

The BBC documentary broadcast Wednesday showed Slavkov, a Bulgarian, and Serbian sports agent Goran Takac discussing how to secure votes for the site of the 2012 Olympic games with two BBC reporters posing as businessmen.

The IOC said its executive board had decided to revoke all the rights and privileges accorded to Slavkov as an Olympic committee member for the duration of the inquiry. Slavkov's accreditation to the games was similarly revoked.

Slavkov, who is also president of Bulgaria's Football Association, vowed to clear his name and restore the reputation of his country.
