NATO Warns Of Violence Ahead Of Afghan Vote

4 September 2004 -- NATO officials in Afghanistan warned today that the country might face more Taliban attacks as the October presidential election approaches.

Ken Mackillop, a spokesman for the NATO-led stabilization force, said that the Taliban threatened to step up attacks in an effort to disrupt the elections.

He said both the U.S. and NATO-led forces are taking extra measures to increase security ahead of the 9 October presidential polling but suggested it might be impossible to prevent all attacks.

The comments came after a violent week in Afghanistan during which three bomb attacks killed at least 20 people.
