Palestinans Mourn Arafat

11 November 2004 -- Palestinians rushed into the streets of West Bank and Gaza today to mourn Yasser Arafat.

Many carried flags, clutched his photograph and waved the trademark head scarf of the leader considered the national patriarch.

Black smoke from burning tires rose across the Gaza Strip. Palestinian flags at Arafat's battered compound in the West Bank city of Ramallah were lowered to half-staff.

Arafat, who led the Palestinian people through four decades, died at a Paris hospital early today. He had been in a coma for a week.
