Alleged Top Aid To Basaev Reportedly Killed

26 November 2004 -- The Russian Federal Security Service says its officers killed a top aide to Chechen guerrilla leader Shamil Basaev after he put up armed resistance to arrest.

A spokesman for the service's Ingushetian branch, Yuri Smolyaninov, said today that three officers were wounded late yesterday in the operation to capture Akhmed Sambiev in the Ingushetian city of Nazran.

The ITAR-TASS news agency reported that Sambiev was either Syrian or Turkish.
