U.S. Reserves Right To Send Iran Case To UN

29 November 2004 -- The United States says it retains the option of reporting Iran to the United Nations Security Council despite today's agreement by Tehran to freeze its uranium-enrichment activities.

The UN's nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, today adopted a resolution endorsing Iran's total freeze on all uranium enrichment activities. The IAEA's board of governors voted not to refer the case to the UN Security Council.

But the head of the U.S. delegation, Jackie Sanders, said that under the UN charter, any member country can bring to the attention of the Security Council a situation that might endanger global peace and security.

Sanders warned international corporations against exporting any weapons-related equipment to Iran or risk U.S. economic sanctions.
