Kuchma Announces New Prosecutor-General

10 December 2004 -- Outgoing Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma announced today he has reappointed Svyatoslav Piskun as prosecutor-general.

Piskun was sacked from the post last year for gross misconduct.

Piskun replaces Hennadiy Vasylyev, who Kuchma sacked on 8 December as part of a compromise with the opposition led by presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko.

Piskun was dismissed as prosecutor-general in October 2003 after being charged by a special state anticorruption commission with impeding investigations into financial crimes and forcing several prosecutors to "make illegal decisions on criminal cases" to defend various companies.

The announcement of his reappointment was made today in a statement by Kuchma's office. It offered no explanation.
