Russia Plans Laws Against Industrial Polluters

1 January 2005 -- Russia plans its first laws to crack down on industrial polluters next year.

The natural resources minister said yesterday that offending companies will be forced to invest in clean technology rather than pay fines.

Yuri Trutnev said it was time to rein in Soviet-era industries.

His comments were published as part of the government's plans for next year on the official Russian government website (http://www.pravitelstvo.gov.ru).

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
