Tajik President Shuffles Officials

5 January 2005 -- Tajik President Imomali Rakhmonov made several changes in the government today.

Rakhmonov removed Qozidavlat Qomidov as deputy prime minister appointing him to be Tajikistan's ambassador to Turkmenistan.

Rakhmonov also dismissed Deputy Interior Minister Habibulloh Yusufov, who also commanded Interior Ministry forces, and replaced him with Abdumannon Ghoziyev.

Also dismissed were Deputy Interior Minister Mahmadsaid Juraqulov and the deputy head of the antidrug agency, Rahim Karimov.

Presidential press secretary Abdufattoh Sharipov said the changes were made due to serious problems in the work of law enforcement agencies that emerged just prior to the New Year.

Sharipov said there were allegations of corruption and abuse of office but did not elaborate.
