Kyrgyz Opposition Decides To Halt Protest Rally

1 February 2005 -- Supporters of former Kyrgyz ambassadors seeking to run in upcoming national elections have decided to stop their protest today and use different ways to defend the rights of the former diplomats.

Members of the committee for protecting the rights of Roza Otunbaeva and Mambetjunus Abylov have rallied in front of the parliament since 7 January demanding their registration to run in the 27 February national elections.

A total of four former Kyrgyz diplomats had their registration to run in the elections rejected because they had not resided continuously in the country during the last five years.

The committee said the main aim of the rally is to draw attention to what they call violations of Kyrgyz diplomats' rights.

The committee demands that the election law be corrected and changed.
