Russia's RIA Novosti news agency quotes the press service of the North Caucasus Anti-Terrorist Coordination Center as saying the man -- identified as Adam Tepsurkaev -- was killed while resisting arrest near Grozny. The Russian military did not say when the incident took place.
The Kavkaz-Center separatist information website, however, says the claim could not be immediately verified.
Meanwhile, Chechnya's pro-Moscow first deputy prime minister Ramzan Kadyrov said today another close associate of Basaev had been arrested. Kadyrov claimed the man, whom he did not identify by name, was plotting to assassinate him on Basaev's behalf.
