Moldova President To Meet NATO, EU Officials

President Voronin 7 June 2005 -- Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin traveled to Brussels today to meet with top NATO and European Union officials.

Voronin is expected to meet with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer to discuss the separatist conflict in Transdniester.

Voronin is scheduled to travel to Strasbourg on 8 June to discuss the same issue with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and European Parliament President Josep Borrell Fontelles.

Transdniester, a mostly Russian-speaking region in Moldova, broke away in 1992 after a short war in which some 1,500 people were killed.

Russia, Ukraine, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe are currently mediating the conflict.
