IAEA Sets Up Committee On Nuclear Verifications

17 June 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) today established a special committee to deal with difficult verification problems, such as investigating Iran's nuclear program.

The measure is aimed at boosting the enforcement of global atomic security rules. It was adopted after the United States last year requested that such a body be established in the IAEA.

The United States says that the situations involving Iran and North Korea's nuclear programs warrant stronger investigations of possible nuclear violations.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
