Albania Awaits Results Of Parliamentary Vote

4 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The first official results are expected to be released later today from Albania's parliamentary elections.

Opposition Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha and Socialist Prime Minister Fatos Nanos have each already declared victory for their side in the 3 July ballot, despite calls from authorities not to make such pronouncements until official results are available.

Election observers from European countries are expected to deliver their assessment later today of the fairness of the vote, in which some 2.8 million people were eligible to cast ballots for 140
parliament seats.

News reports say that although the voting appeared generally calm, one election official was shot dead in the capital Tirana. Police could not immediately say if politics was the motive for the killing.
