Daghestan MP Shot Dead

5 July 2005 -- Russian media are reporting today that a member of the local parliament in Russia's volatile southern republic of Daghestan has been murdered.

Reports say Zubair Tatayev was shot dead late yesterday while traveling by car near Daghestan's border with Chechnya.

Interfax quotes an unidentified Interior Ministry official as saying Tatayev's uncle, Ibragim Tutushev, was in the car and also killed.

Besides being a deputy, Tatayev directed the Khasavyurt branch of the regional natural gas company Daggaz.

Last week, 10 Russian soldiers were killed by a powerful bomb blast in Daghestan's capital, Makhachkala.
