At Least 34 Killed In China Mine Blast

11 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- At least 34 miners were killed and nearly 50 others are missing after an underground gas explosion at a mine in western China.

Chinese government and mine officials say nearly 90 miners were working underground when the blast occurred at a mine in far-western Xinjiang Province.

State media says that emergency workers have so far rescued four miners and confirmed 34 dead.

Nearly every year, thousands of workers are killed at mines in China due to poor safety measures.
