Four Afghan Militants Escape From U.S. Base

11 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The U.S. military says that four detained militants escaped from a U.S. base in Afghanistan today.

The four men escaped from Bagram Air Base, north of Kabul. The jailbreak sparked a large-scale ground and air search for the escapees.

In other developments, the U.S. military says that the body of a missing U.S. commando has been located in eastern Afghanistan, bringing an end to the search for the last member of a four-man special-forces unit that disappeared last month.

One of the four men was rescued eight days ago, and the other two were found dead the next day.
