Alleged Baby Traffickers Go On Trial In Albania

12 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- A trial against three men accused of selling newborn babies to foreign buyers began in Tirana today.

Media reports say that the group allegedly smuggled pregnant women across the border to Greece and sold their babies after birth. The mothers were reportedly paid $490 for their newborns. It was not clear how much the alleged smugglers earned.

One of the three is being tried in absentia and another has already been sentenced to 20 years in prison for a similar crime.
