15 July 2005 -- Officials said today that U.S. forces in Afghanistan have killed 24 suspected Islamist militants on the Pakistani side of the border.
Pakistani military spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan said the fighting occurred late yesterday in the North Waziristan tribal region.
A spokesman for the U.S. military, Lieutenant-Colonel Jerry O'Hara, said U.S. artillery and aircraft had responded to a rocket attack on a border control point, in which one Afghan soldier was killed.
In a separate incident, at least seven Afghan policemen were killed today in an attack in the southern Kandahar Province in which four suspected Taliban militants also died.
