Chechnya President Says 13 Dead In Blast

19 July 2005 -- Chechen President Alu Alkhanov says 13 people were killed and roughly 20 wounded today in a rebel attack.

Alkhanov was speaking to journalists at the site of the attack in the village of Znamenskoye, some 60 kilometers from
the Chechen capital Grozny.

Reports say the attackers first opened fire on a police vehicle, and then blew up the vehicle. Civilian bystanders are said to be among the dead.


RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
