U.S. Journalist Killed In Iraq


3 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- An American journalist has been found shot dead in the southern Iraqi city of Al-Basrah.

Iraqi police said freelance journalist Steven Vincent was shot dead after he and his Iraqi translator were abducted by gunmen late on 2 August in Al-Basrah. The translator, Nour Weidi, was seriously wounded.

The U.S. Embassy has confirmed Vincent's death.

Vincent had been in Al-Basrah for the last two months. He was the author of a book on postwar Iraq.
