UN Asks Iran To Wait Before Restarting Nuclear Activities

3 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The United Nations nuclear agency today asked Iran to wait a week before restarting its uranium conversion activities, but Iran says that would be unacceptable. Iran says it hopes to start up the program today.

The EU and the United States say Iran could be hauled before the UN Security Council if it restarts processing uranium, possibly leading to sanctions.

The European Union has warned Iran that restarting its suspended nuclear activities would ruin two years of negotiations over Iran's nuclear program. European Commission spokesman Stefaan De Rynck said today relations between the EU and Iran have reached what he described as a "critical stage."

Those negotiations started after the United States accused Tehran of covertly trying to develop nuclear arms, which Iran denies.
