Governor of Russia's Altai Region Buried


10 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Mikhail Yevdokimov, a well-known comedian who was last year elected governor of Russia's Siberian Altai Krai was buried today --> http://www.rferl.org/featuresarticle/2005/08/229f9271-18d8-4ca3-9f21-ae798cb4ed7d.html in his home village.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, politicians, actors, and thousands of ordinary citizens attended Yevdokimov's funeral in the village of Verkh-Obskoye.

Yevdokimov died when his car veered off a highway and hit a tree on 7 August near the town of Biisk, some 3,000 kilometers southeast of Moscow. The driver of the vehicle and a bodyguard were also killed. Yevdokimov's wife was seriously injured in the crash.

Officials are still investigating the incident, but have dismissed any suggestion of foul play.
