Explosion Hits Kashmir On Indian Independence Day

15 August 2005 (RFE/RL) - An explosion was reported in Indian Kashmir's main city of Srinagar this morning. There have been no reports of injuries or casualties.

The blast occurred near a stadium where later today national independence celebrations are due to take place.

India is on high alert today for celebrations marking the day it became free from British rule in 1947.

Antiaircraft guns and snipers have been deployed in the capital New Delhi to prevent militant attacks.

Separatist groups fighting Indian rule in Kashmir have frequently targeted ceremonies marking Indian's independence anniversary and the main political separatist group has called for a general strike to mark the day.
