Rice Calls On China, Russia, And India To Pressure Iran

Condoleezza Rice (file photo) 9 September 2005 -- U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has called on Russia, China, and India to join in threatening Iran with UN sanctions.

Rice, speaking in Washington, said Iran needs to hear a unified message from the international community on its nuclear ambitions.

Three leading EU states have offered Iran economic concessions in exchange for halting suspicious nuclear activities, but those efforts have not succeeded. Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful.

Reports say referring Iran to the UN Security Council would be a last resort and may not be supported by permanent council members like Russia and China.

Today, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandr Yakovenko cautioned against "hasty steps" with respect to Iran.
