Kazakh Police Break Up Protest In Almaty

18 September 2005 -- Kazakh riot police broke up a protest today in Almaty against the alleged failure of the authorities to address the housing problems of low-income citizens.

Protest organizer Marat Mynbaev said some 1,000 people attempted to march from the impoverished district of Shanyrak in the outskirts of Almaty to the city's main square.
Riot police reportedly stopped the marchers and forcibly dispersed them. There were no immediate reports of any injuries.

Twelve protesters were detained.

Police in Almaty broke up a similar protest last month.
