Khodorkovskii Hearing Adjourned For Several Hours

22 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- A court in Moscow has adjourned for several hours the appeal hearing of jailed former Russian oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovskii.

Khodorkovskii's lawyers asked for a one-day postponement to consult with their client.

But the judges adjourned the hearing only for several hours to give lawyers time to speak with Khodorkovskii in the courtroom.

Khodorkovskii is appealing his nine-year prison sentence for tax evasion and fraud.

His defense team accuses the court of trying to rush through his appeal to prevent him from registering as a candidate in a December parliamentary by-election. He is legally permitted to run for office as long as his appeal is under way.
