Uzbek Police Detain Four Opposition Activists

27 September 2005 -- Uzbek authorities today reportedly detained four opposition activists who were on their way to speak at a news conference.

Dilorom Ishakova, spokeswoman for the Erk (Liberty) opposition party, said that authorities detained party Secretary-General Atanazar Arifov and three other party members.

Ishakova said that the four were scheduled to appear at a press conference in Tashkent. The event was canceled after the four were detained.

Ishakova says that the press conference was to be a platform for the recently created opposition group that calls itself the United Democratic Forces of Uzbekistan.
