Belarusian Opposition Say Their Speeches Are Censored

United opposition candidate Alyaksandr Milinkevich campaigning in Hrodna, western Belarus on March 4 (RFE/RL) March 6, 2006 -- Two candidates in the March 19 presidential election in Belarus today complained that their political speeches are being censored.

Opposition candidate Alyaksandr Milinkevich today complained that one of his recent political broadcasts had been cut. He said the cut was made at a point where he was mocking President Alyaksandr Lukashenka for his alleged lack of culture.

Also today, Nina Shidlovskaya – the spokeswoman for opposition candidate Alexander Kozulin -- said that authorities cut seven minutes from a 30-minute political broadcast he had recorded.

Lukashenka is seeking a third term in the March 19 election.

Belarusian oppositionist groups, rights advocates, and the U.S. State Department say they do not believe the vote will meet democratic standards.
