A police spokesman in Nangarhar Province, Ghafor Khan, said U.S. warplanes were eventually called in on March 8 after several hours of fighting to bomb a building from which the militants were firing on security forces.

Khan said one militant was killed. The others escaped. The body of a woman and a wounded child were found in a nearby house.

The U.S. military has not confirmed the involvement of U.S. warplanes.
