Bulgaria Agrees To Host U.S. Military Bases

(RFE/RL) March 24, 2006 --  Bulgaria and the United States have reached an agreement that will allow the U.S. military to use bases in Bulgaria.

Bulgarian negotiator Lubomir Ivanov and U.S. Ambassador to Sofia John Beyrle said today the agreement will face a final review by both governments.

The deal is due to be signed late next month when U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visits Bulgaria during an informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers.

Bulgarian Defense Minister Veselin Bliznakov said that Bulgaria's parliament will have to approve each time the bases are used for operations in third countries.
