Alleged Kyrgyz Crime Boss Buried


Rysbek Akmatbaev, pictured at a political rally in his support in late March (RFE/RL) PRAGUE, May 11, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Rysbek Akmatbaev, a reputed criminal boss killed on May 10, was today buried in Balykchy, his hometown.


Kyrgyz Interior Minister Murat Sutalinov says shooting appears to have been the work of a criminal group.


Akmatbaev had sought to break into national politics and emerged with the most votes in a recent parliamentary by-election.


However, his victory was not confirmed as he remained under investigation for murder.
