Up To 200 Feared Dead In Nigerian Pipeline Blast

May 12, 2006 -- Between 150 and 200 people were killed when an oil pipeline exploded near Lagos, Nigeria's largest city.

Police said many of the victims were burned beyond recognition. The blast occurred after thieves drilled into the pipeline to steal oil.

Dozens of deadly explosions have taken place along Nigeria's oil pipelines in recent years,
often blamed on vandalism.
