U.A.E. Diplomat Believed Abducted In Iraq


(RFE/RL) May 17, 2006 -- Iraqi police say gunmen have abducted a diplomat from the United Arab Emirates.

The diplomat, identified as Naji Rashid al-Nuaimi, was reported seized on May 16 in Baghdad after gunmen wounded his Sudanese bodyguard.

At least 36 people were reported killed in attacks in Iraq on on May 16, including at least 19 who died in a shooting and bombing attack at a parking lot in Baghdad.

The U.S. military said a U.S. soldier was killed by a bomb in Baghdad, and that two other U.S. soldiers died in attacks on May 15.

In another development, reports quoted Iraqi political party officials as saying a new cabinet could be announced in the coming days. Prime Minister-designate Nuri Kamil al-Maliki is facing a constitutional deadline of May 22 to form the government.
