Israeli Premier Arrives For First U.S. Summit

Ehud Olmert (file photo) (epa) May 22, 2006 -- Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert arrived in Washington on May 21 for a three-day visit.

Olmert will meet with U.S. President George W. Bush on May 23 at the White House. He is also likely to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

The stalled Middle East peace process and Iran's nuclear program are expected to top the agenda during discussions.

On May 21, Israel authorized the release of $11 million in frozen Palestinian taxes in a bid to ease a humanitarian crisis.

While both Israel and the United States are working to isolate the Hamas-led Palestinian government, the Jewish state has been under pressure to help avert the collapse of the Palestinian Authority.
