German Court Tries Iraqis For Plot To Kill Allawi

Iyad Allawi, the target of the alleged assassination attempt (file photo) (AFP) June 20, 2006 -- Three Iraqis went on trial in Germany today on charges of plotting to kill Iraq's prime minister.

Prosecutors say Ata Abd al-Aziz Rashid, Mazen Ali Hussein, and Rafiq Muhammad Yusef are members of an Iraqi insurgent group, Ansar al-Islam, which has links to Al-Qaeda.

They say the men planned to assassinate then-Prime Minister Iyad Allawi when he visited Berlin in December 2004.
