Eight Insurgents Killed In Southern Afghanistan


Smoke rises from a U.S. armored car hit by militants in southern Afghanistan (file photo) (epa) June 22, 2006 -- The U.S. military says Afghan and coalition forces today killed eight insurgents and captured six during a raid of a militant compound in Oruzgan Province.


A military statement described the compound as a meeting place for Taliban fighters.


Afghan and coalition forces are in the midst of a major operation against militants in the south of the country.


Earlier in the day, four U.S. soldiers were reported to have been killed in fighting in the northeastern province of Nuristan.
