Serbian Supreme Court Judge Jailed

(RFE/RL) July 7, 2006 -- A judge in Serbia's Supreme Court will serve eight years in prison after being convicted today of taking bribes from a criminal gang.

Judge Ljubomir Vuckovic is the first Supreme Court judge in Serbian history to be tried and convicted on corruption charges.

The Special Organized Crime Court in Belgrade ruled that Vuckovic promised to overturn a prison sentence against the gang's leader in exchange for money.
