40 Dead In Pakistan Bridge Collapse

(RFE/RL) August 6, 2006 -- At least 40 people were killed and many others are missing after flooding caused a bridge to collapse in Pakistan.

Police say the bridge collapsed on August 5 in Mardan, a
city about 100 kilometers northwest of Pakistan's capital, Islamabad.

Dozens of people have been killed in landslides and floods caused by
heavy rains in Pakistan over the past two days.

Meanwhile, Pakistan today deported 91 Afghans who were detained in southwestern Baluchistan Province for illegal entry. Pakistani authorities say the deportees were all arrested in the past month in various towns in Baluchistan.

Baluchistan borders southern Afghanistan and is home to many Afghan refugees. Pakistan deported dozens of Afghans last month.
