Statue Of Kyrgyz President's Brother Unveiled

Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiev (file photo) (RFE/RL) September 1, 2006 -- A two-meter bronze statue of President Kurmanbek Bakiev's late younger brother was unveiled today in the southern Kyrgyz city of Jalal-Abad.

The statue stands in the yard of a school named after Jusupbek Bakiev.

A defeated candidate in the controversial 2005 legislative polls, Jusupbek Bakiev actively participated in the protest movement that led to President Askar Akaev's downfall.

He died in March 2006.
