Uzbek Gets Six Years On Human-Trafficking Charges

(RFE/RL) October 2, 2006 -- A pro-government Uzbek information website reports that a court in western Nawaiy Region has sentenced a farmer to six years in jail.

Court officials are quoted as saying the defendant was convinced of illegally sending 11 farm laborers to Ufa, the capital of Russia's Republic of Bashkortostan.

Some of the workers reportedly managed to return to Uzbekistan and testified at the trial.
