Baltic States Reaffirm Plan To Build Nuclear Plant

(RFE/RL) December 8, 2006 -- The three Baltic states have reiterated their commitment to build a new nuclear power plant to increase their energy independence.

The pledge came at a meeting between the countries' prime ministers today in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius.

The new plant is to be built in Lithuania to replace the aging Ignalina plant, which Lithuania has pledged to shut down by 2009.

The new plant is not expected to be operational before 2015.
