Armenian Parliament Debating Dual-Citizenship Bill

(RFE/RL) February 21, 2007 -- Armenia's parliament has passed in its first reading a bill allowing dual citizenship for members of the country's large foreign diaspora and others.

Justice Minister David Haroutiunian told lawmakers the legislation could permit Armenian citizenship for foreigners who are at least 18 years old, can speak Armenian, and know the country's constitution, as well as foreigners who have an Armenian spouse or who are of Armenian origin.

The second of three readings is scheduled for February 22.
