Iranian Deputies Seek To Create U.S. Friendship Group

(RFE/RL) May 15, 2007 -- A group of Iranian deputies have signed a petition to form a parliamentary committee aimed at easing tensions with the United States.

Lawmaker Dariush Ghanbari said at least 10 legislators, including reformists and conservatives, have already signed the document, which calls for the establishment of an Iranian-U.S. friendship committee.

The petition is to be presented to the parliamentary speaker, who has the right to accept or reject it.

Washington broke off diplomatic relations with Tehran in 1980.
